Calp Town Council has received the technical report corresponding to the July 2025–June 2026 annual cycle of the Coastal Monitoring Network, prepared by the Institute of Coastal Ecology (IEL), which evaluates the environmental quality of the municipality’s coastal marine waters.

This monitoring programme has been carried out since September 2016 and, since last year, combines hydrographic data provided by the Copernicus satellite with quarterly field sampling conducted at the monitoring stations located at La Fossa Beach, Cantal Roig Beach, Puerto Blanco Beach and Les Urques.

The report’s findings confirm that the four monitoring stations along Calp’s coastline present either an optimal or good environmental quality status. Specifically, La Fossa Beach and Cantal Roig Beach maintain an optimal quality rating, as no values exceeding the limits established by current regulations have been recorded at any point throughout the historical monitoring series.

Meanwhile, Puerto Blanco Beach and Les Urques receive a good quality rating, although both stations recorded an optimal status during the current annual cycle, corresponding to the period from July 2025 to June 2026.

In the case of Les Urques, the good rating is due to a single anomalous value detected throughout the entire monitoring series, corresponding to a chlorophyll reading provided by the Copernicus satellite in August 2024. All other indicators have consistently remained within the limits established by legislation. As for Puerto Blanco Beach, the report indicates that the assessment is linked to certain anomalous values recorded between 2022 and 2025, possibly related to the restructuring and improvement works carried out at the neighbouring marina. No figures exceeding the legal limit have been recorded outside that period, including during the current annual cycle.

The report also highlights a good level of water oxygenation and normal salinity and pH values at all four monitoring stations, typical of the Mediterranean marine environment. Likewise, only low levels of suspended solids and turbidity were recorded. In addition, all stations showed water temperatures slightly higher than expected during both the summer and winter periods.

Councillor for the Environment, Pere Moll, stated that “these results confirm that Calp’s beaches maintain an excellent state of conservation, which is the result of continuous efforts in coastal protection and rigorous long-term monitoring.” The councillor added that “we will continue to support this type of independent scientific monitoring, which allows us to detect any anomalies at an early stage and take the necessary action to preserve our marine environment.”

For her part, the Mayor of Calp, Ana Sala, stated that “the quality of our waters is one of Calp’s greatest assets as both a tourist destination and a place to live, and these results endorse the Town Council’s commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.” Sala added that “we will continue working to ensure that our coastline remains a benchmark for environmental quality within the Valencian Community.”
